Is the Ban on E Cigs just plain stupidity?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110604/ap_on_bi_ge/us_electronic_cigarettes_smoking_bans

Despite the fact that E Cigs do emit smoke, only water vapor, they have been banned just like real Cigs in many places. I am not sure if this belongs in Rant and Rave or Rant -Oldies but goodies section,, or if it belongs in the new fangled Rant and Rave-Political section.
I don't smoke, although I did for at one time, but i think this is absurd. Let's at least give smokers the right to smoker these. The following is from the link.

RICHMOND, Va. – That's not smoke coming out of Cliff Phillips' mouth.

But that hasn't stopped others from cringing, making remarks, waving their hands in their faces and coughing at the sight of the vapor from his electronic cigarette.

"They're just conditioned if they see you inhale and exhale something, it's got to be smoke and it's going to stink. ... They're not even smelling anything," said Phillips, a 61-year-old retiree and former cigarette smoker from Cuba, Ill.

Electronic cigarettes don't burn and don't give off smoke. But they're at the center of a social and legal debate over whether it's OK to "light up" in places where regular smokes are banned. Despite big differences between cigarettes and their electronic cousins, several states, workplaces and localities across the country have explicitly included e-cigs in smoking bans.

Some have clarified that the battery-powered devices don't fall under those bans. Others are retooling smoke-free laws to include them

Here is from King County, Washington

The measure is not a complete ban on e-cigarettes. Rather, it prohibits e-cigarette smoking in the same places where real smoking is forbidden by the state, such as restaurants, bars and workplaces.
But the state's tobacco smoking ban, adopted in 2006, was based on the fact that second-hand smoke causes cancer and other diseases. The rationale behind King County's e-cig ban was a fear of eroding "social norms."

Come on people, do we live in a police state? This is absurd.
