The Downtown Route-Someone Had To Do It

It was just a job, a way to make some spending money. OK? Really! Of course, if one had to have an early morning paper route, what route could be better than the downtown Wallace route back in the mid Sixties. And what route could pique the fantasies of a 13 and 1 4 year old's mind more than the Wallace downtown route?  Come on my old Wallace readers, you know what I am talking about.

It was no fun getting up so early, and as a matter of fact, getting up so early kind of made me  nauseated at times. But, I  was like the old US mail carriers in that  neither rain, nor snow, nor half naked ladies would keep  me from delivering that newspaper up those stairs. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention, my route had all of the doors that lead to ??? I could only imagine what went on behind those lighted signs, behind those colored doors, and up those steep carpeted stairs.I could only imagine what went on when on a lucky morning, a woman wearing nothing but a skimpy bikini would open the door at the top of the stairs and stand  there in front of, smiling, and taking he paper out of my trembling hands.

That would have been pay off enough, but each month when I collected, they tipped very well. No, it is not what you are thinking, Get your minds out of the gutter.(:) But, one Christmas, i  thought it was so funny because the madam of the Jade Rooms, Loma Del Monte, gave me a transistor radio that said " Jade Rooms" on it.

So, I peddled those papers, and later did the same route for the evening paper, the now defunct Kellogg Evening News. Lots of good memories, and no, I am not going to let you in on my fantasies.
