He was fuming, and flames of fire were coming out of his nostrils like a dragon in the days of yore tales.
After all, a grave injustice had been inflicted on him, and by golly, he was going to get his revenge.Who was I to argue? I was only a lowly desk clerk at the time.
"Get me the police, now, ", he barked at me. I called the local police department, and handed the phone to him.
Evidently, his room had been broken into, and there were missing items of value, at least that was what he was telling the dispatcher.
This particular hotel was an old, residential hotel in Salem, Oregon, and it was only my second venture into the hotel world. I was still a student, and had moved to Oregon for further schooling. The old Senator Hotel was a lot like the Carlton in Tacoma where I had been initiated into the world of guest service. I guess the Senator's main claim to fame was that President Hoover had stayed there. Anyway, it was now reduced to a weekly rental place. The Senator was not without colorful occupants, just like the Carlton had. One of my favorite guests there had been the third baseman for the old St Louis Browns baseball team, The Browns later moved to Baltimore in 1954 and became the modern day Baltimore Orioles team.
The guest now standing in front of me had only been there a few weeks. He was relatively young, and he had been nothing but polite and above board in his dealings withe me. He was very upset now, though, and I had never seen him like this. It was getting close to my shift change, and I was tired and wanted to go home. The police arrived and went with my guest to his room to get a statement and to see the "crime" scene.
I left the hotel and went home.
That night, when I arrived for shift, I asked the clerk that I was relieving how our guest's visit with the police had gone. He started laughing and laughing. I asked him what was so funny, and he said, "Well the police made an arrest all right, but it turns out that our guest had a felony warrant out on him for a much more serious crime."
I stood there amazed. How could anybody be so dumb as to call the police to report a crime against them, when they had a a felony warrant outstanding on them? Well, who said criminals were bright?
This was the first time that I witnessed this, but by no means was it the last. I had a female guest yelling rape one time, only to find out that she--well, I will save that story for another day.
