Friday Nostalgia

Here are some of the hotels that I worked at over the years. Now, please note that some of the photos are way before my time, and many of the structures are now gone or have been rebuilt.

OK, this photo was obviously way before my time, but this was the Senator Hotel in Salem, Oregon. The Senator was the second hotel that I worked in, and I was 21 years old when I worked there. The Senator was primarily a  residential hotel in those days, although we did rent a few nightly rooms. The Senator had some colorful and interesting residents, including one gentleman who had once been the third baseman for the old St Louis Browns baseball team. The Browns, in case you don't know are the current Baltimore Orioles. The Senator was torn down in 1997, and in 2001the bus and office complex opened at the old site.

The old Carlton Hotel, Tacoma, WA, and my very first hotel job. For those of you who have followed this blog through the years, you probably remember that I wrote this magnificent old lady many times. Here is what She is today.
Originally built as the high-end Carlton Hotel — 32 of the 120 rooms even had a private bath — the building served railroad passengers for many years.  Owner Anton Huth named the hotel after his son. Later owners changed the name to the Earle Hotel.
It was one of the earliest restoration projects in the Union Station Historic District and now serves as office space for a variety of tenants, including the University of Washington Tacoma.fhttp://www.tacoma.uw.edu/campus-map/carlton-center-car

I worked at the Best Western Kings Way Inn in Portland in 1978 as an auditor. The hotel is still there, and now is called 'Inn At The Conference Center". Our business in the 1970's came mostly from the government offices in the area. We had great rates for federal and state government workers. Also, we were located very close to the famous "Lloyd Center", at one time reputed to be the largest mall in the world. Lloyds was a great place to visit, and the ice skating rink there is where the famous Tanya Harding learned to skate. When I lived in the area, there was also a restaurant at mall that featured a cinnamon roll that was bigger than a large dinner plate, and my oh my was it ever delicious.

Well, that ends a trip down memory lane for this Friday. Wow, writing about those days makes me miss them, and I sure would like to have on of those huge cinnamon rolls right now!
