Tear Down the Electoral College Campus

It is time to abolish the Electoral College. It is an institution who that has outlived the original intention of establishing it. I have to be mildly amused and severely peeved that we give homage to our founding fathers for their high ideals of freedom  and yet, they did the political double speak that the masses, that is you and me , are not to be trusted with actually picking our supreme leader.

Well, the time has come to do away with that old college. First of all, where the heck is the campus? Does anyone actually know anyone who has graduated from there? And most important of all, do they have a football team? I think not, and therefore I say, tear down that old campus.

Seriously, eight states have now joined in saying that the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationwide gets all of the electoral votes for that state. California is considering joining that group. This would be a good interim way to do it. Abolishing the college would require a Constitutional Amendment, which could take years. This way, the popular vote would take the election without having to change the whole Constitution. The time has come.

Cedar: I suggest that the electoral college is based upon the difference between a Republic and a Democracy. Not having a football team...hmm...I thought that the Dallas Cowboys were 'America's Team'?

GF, now you are confusing me with semantics.

Cedar: Google "Republic vs. Democracy". They are actually polar opposites. The words of the pledge of allegiance are instructive. "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." To the "republic" (e.g. not democracy)for which it (the flag) stands.

I know, I know, GF, but I have always wanted a true democracy.

Cedar: Seriously? Think about what you are saying. My youngest son is a Federalist Paper reader. Ha. He also has Jefferson's notes of the constitutional convention. It is actually very interesting reading and shows how far we have strayed from a Republic to a Democracy.

Well, this is opening an interesting debate that could go on and on.Straying from a Republic? I don't think so. If one of the purposes of a Republic is to protect the minorities from the "evil majority", it is working overtime.
Let's take a very simple thing thing that happened when I was living in Seattle, and in other cities, I am sure. During Christmas, the King County employees were forbidden to say Merry Christmas" while on county property.
I say. BS. the majority , the vast majority, of people in this country
celebrate Christmas. It is wrong to stifle the rights of the majority. After all, every thinks it is wrong to stifle the right of the minority.

Now, of course, we cannot pass laws that say we will do away with all minorities, I am not saying that. But, the majority have rights, and those rights seem to fall in second place. That, my friend, is hard to comprehend.

I am not expressing myself in the way I would like this morning, but I will think about it some more.

GF, I agree that we need a balance. My original post, stands, though. We do not need the EC to decide an election, the Presidency should be decided by the direct vote of the people.
