The calendar has once more turned over and the festival known as Halloween had been put to rest for another year. November is here, and the rain and the wind can right along with it, much like as they did when I was growing up Wallace. Images of grey, cold, bare trees and streets littered with the remnants of what were once living leaves plays in the theater of my memory. Early Autumn with the golden palette of color has been reborn by the flip of the calendar to the dark days of pre-winter.
Ah, but lest you think I am being negative let me set that straight. I have great memories of November in Wallace. November brought the first quarter report cards for the bright young minds of Wallace School District # 393. Basketball practice was underway for both the junior and senior high schools. Thanksgiving was only a few weeks away. and that meant Christmas as right around the corner. I have very warm memories of turning on the radio on Saturday afternoons and listening to the one and only Bob Curtis, the voice of the Idaho Vandals, call the gridiron battles of the Vandals.
Yes, November is a little darker and a little greyer, but it is full of promise for days to come. November was special when I was growing up Wallace.
