This Day In 1959

I love looking through old newspapers and reading, and in some cases, remembering events from days gone by. For those of us who grew up in Wallace or even in the greater Spokane area, we had several news sources to choose from. Wallace had the North Idaho Press, Kellogg had the Kellogg Evening News, and Spokane had two, yes, count them, two dailies, The Review and the Chronicle. These newspapers provided the windows that allowed us to  know what was happening outside of our little corner of the globe.

Here are some items from the Spokane Chronicle on June 24, 1959

B.F. Goodrich Tires in Spokane had a tire sale, yes, eat your heart out, 2 new tires for the princely sum of $23.90, but wait, that's not all. As and added enticement they were offering two tires for only --drum roll----$2.00 down. Yes, that's right folks, get your tires today for only 2.00 down.

Funeral services were announced for a well known Wallace man, and one who all of us old Wallace natives know, Roy H. Kingsbury. Mr. Kingsbury was associated with numerous mining ventures, a grocery store in Burke, The Wallace Hospital, the Wallace Brokerage Company and was very active in community clubs and events,

The Flame Restaurant in Spokane has this-T Bone Steak-$1.45

Finally, sports "experts" seem to be just as "expert" in 1959 as they are today. One boxing "expert" predicted that heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson would knock out challngerJohanansson in the first round. Well, that fight did not end that way.. Floyd was knocked down 7 times on his way to being put down for the count in round 3. Floyd would later avenge that loss.

And that is the way it was on this day in 1959.
