What Looks Like Dirt May Be Gold

I have written several times in previous blogs that Wallace was enormously underrated when the outside world thought of what we were like. Many thought of us only as miners, loggers, drunks, and hookers. OK, OK, we did have our share of drunks and ladies of the evening, but Wallace was so much more than what met the scornful eyes of even Coeur d' Alene and Spokane residents who cast a  holier than thou look our way. I have a theory about that look of condemnation cast our way. I believe that secretly, in their innermost hearts that the look was actually one of pure envy.

Yes, I think that they wanted to have the lifestyle that we so richly enjoyed We were relaxed, had mountains for our back yard, and we had security. The mining jobs during my growing up days were about as secure as any jobs in the world. The doctors and other medical professions made a very comfortable living, because so many had great medical insurance from the mines. Banks flourished, churches had full offering plates, and the "houses" brought in more out of towners than any tourist program could ever hope to accomplish.

Was I proud to be counted as those from there, a true Wallace native? I sure was and am.

Next, the hidden  jewels of Wallace.
