The Cycle

I think that liberalism is more of a form of rebellion and youthful non-conformity than it is a real heart felt philosophy and political creed. Why have I come to this conclusion? I believe this because most of us become more and more conservative the older that we become..

When I was in my mid twenties to late forties I was as " liberal" as anyone could be. I argued with anyone who would listen about politics, religion, drugs, and human rights. I said that I was a Democrat, and indeed, that I leaned toward socialism as a viable economic system for the United States. I said that pot and prostitution should be legalized.

Deep in my heart of hearts I never quite believed what I was spouting off. I always felt a little uncomfortable wearing the liberal hat. If we really believed what we were saying, why did we have to say it with so much venom and hatred? If we really believed what we were saying, we would be at peace with our beliefs, and would not be pushing them on others. No, liberalism was like wearing some clothes that did not quite fit, or a pair of shoes that were too tight.

Now, as I get a little older, I find myself. I find that I am coming home to a comfort zone of being moderately conservative, OK, I am becoming a lot more conservative.
