Remembering Rice's Bakery

There is simply nothing like the smell of fresh baked pastries and bread. The smell simply tantalizes the hunger drive like no other smell does. That same delicious and irresistible aroma bring s feeling of warmth and comfort much like a feeling of being home, Christmas, or a warm fire on a cold January night.

I use to go up to Bank Street for the sole purpose of walking past Rice’s Bakery, and having my senses assaulted with the smell of freshly baked goodies. My favorite was the warm, fresh, maple bars.Mm-I can still smell and taste them.

One of my grade school classes, I can't remember which one since it has been almost ten years ago,got to take a field trip to Rice’s, and we were rewarded with free pastries. I can still picture Justin Rice in the back room kneading and kneading the dough. The smell of flower permeating the air as a preliminary to the main event of the baked treasures.

Oh yes, another great Wallace landmark that is no longer there. There was nothing like the old fashioned family owner bakeries. But alas, they have been replaced all over the country by mega store bakery sections in their massive warehouse stores.

Thinking of that old Wallace bakery still brings a child like smile to my face.

I to love the smell of bakeries.... we are lucky here we have a little battery/cafe in the village that bakes fresh everyday, it is a treat to buy a cake from there, but I usually bake my own bread every other day and bake loads of cakes for my man/boys lunchboxes for work..... so, a treat from the bakery is always nice for me :) x
