What's Up Doc?

Doctors are the only following  professional species that are referred to sometimes by their nurses by the single designation of their professional title. Example: " Doctor wants you to take this pill daily". What's up with that?
I mean you never hear a legal assistant say" Lawyer will see you in court at ten A.M. When is the last time your tax accountant's secretary says to you " CPA says that he needs more documentation"? When is the last time you heard " Dentist says to brush your teeth after every meal'?

On the " non professional" levels, you never hear the following only called by their chosen profession title.
Plumber, Clerk, Housekeeper, Cop, Mechanic,Salesman, and on and on. So, I ask, why do nurses say " Doctor says--"? I think that the rest of those with professional designations should demand equal treatment

Cedar: Wondered the same thing many a time. I think it has to do with what is referred to as the 'God complex.'
God is referred to as 'God', doctors are, or at least on the right hand of God, and thus 'Doctor'.
