Sports Gone Bad

The college football scene has reached a new low. USC has actually recruited and offered a football scholarship to a 13 year old quarterback. When the kid graduates from high school, he will go to USC without a care in the world. Right? Maybe not. I think that recruiting someone this young is child exploitation, and should be against the law.

Come on, I remember being thirteen. This is a little boy. The pressure he will get as he grows up will be tremendous. He will not be able to enjoy the usual years of fun. USC and his parents will be watching him like a hawk. One injury, and it is all over.

Please, let kids be kids.  I love sports, but this has gone over the top.

Cedar: Great point! Of course I have always ascribed to it too. When I began coaching after leaving coaching to go to law school (Ha mistake 101) I coached at N. Idaho Christian School in b-ball and then as my children got to be park and rec age I coached them. Luckily Matt was a caboose by about 8 years and I got three shots at it. During those times, and now, I would set forth basic rules such as #1 Don't hit or hurt the coach; #2 Have Fun; #3 If in doubt about any rules refer to rule #1. Ha. Some parents are nutso. I had one lady who called me up early the morning after a youth (5th grade?) b-ball game. We were behind by one point with 6 seconds left. I took her son out and put in another player, who was very quick. He stole the ball on the inbounds pass, made the basket and we won. Waking me up she said in a pleasant voice, "I want to thank you...(pause) (not a nice voice-e.g. yell) for ruining my son's life. Twas the last youth basketball game I ever coached. When Matt played on a select Sting soccer team I volunteered as a "second assistant" coach. Gave the kids all nicknames. One day the real coaches couldn't make it to practice so they put me in charge. HA! I told the kids, who were use to grueling hard core workouts at age 13, that this was going to be brutally hard. I had them do stretches (worked them hard) and then called them over to the Landcruiser (Betsey) told them to sit down...and we had juice and cookies for the rest of the practice. HA! Never got asked to handle another practice on my own. Kids never forgot it though. HA!

Good job, GF. Kids should have fun.
hey, no one ever recruited us in 7th and 8th grade flag football!Remember MR.Mintz?

My grandson is a baseball and basketball fanatic, and he works at it all of the time. Sometimes I worry about him overdoing it at age eight. Hopefully, he has coaches like you looking out for his best interests.
