Just Follow the Darn Rules Please

Why do some people feel that they don't have to follow the rules? Is the concept of individual rights so embedded in our psyche that we can see it no other way?

I find this rather frightening. Several years ago I was flying out of Spokane in Christmas morning to see see my kids in Seattle. My daughter was flying in from Albuquerque  , and we were going to meet up at Sea-Tac and share a cab to my son's home north of Seattle.I had my ID out and ready to show as we started through security. Sure enough, we were all asked to show ID. The man in front of me decided that this did not apply to him. He snapped at the security agent,"I already showed it when I check in, I am not showing it again."
Oh boy, we had a situation developing here.

The agents were nice at first, politely asking again to see his ID. i was getting ready to tap the guy on his shoulder and tell him that if he made me miss my daughter in Seattle that I was going to cram his ID where the sun doesn't shine. The whole line was getting a little jittery. Finally, the agent told hem, "Sir, if you don't show me your IID, you are not getting on this flight." Yes, some action! With a look that could have curdled sweet cream, the man yanked out his wallet and pulled out his ID. The agent smiled nicely and said thank you to the guy. We all got boarded and I had a wonderful time In Seattle.

This morning, there is a news story about a 69 year old man in Boise who was on a flight from Las Vegas to Boise, As the plane began to descend, the flight attendants made the mandatory instructions to turn off all cell  phones. laptops, etc, The gentleman was sitting next to a 15 year old kid, who for some reason did not think that the rues applied to him. The old guy , who was not related to the kid, decided that enough was enough, and slugged the kid. The old guy was arrested for assault when the plane landed. Hm, does not seem right me.

If I had the money I would contribute to the guy's defense fund

IT Must Have Been the Turf

Congratulations to Eastern Washington University for moving on to the National football championship game in January. This is the first time for the Eagles. It must have been that red turf that I wrote about several months ago. Boise State had great success with the blue, and now EWU with the red. Hopefully the Idaho Vandals can get a silver and gold turf soon.Seriously, way to go EWU. We are proud of you.

Christmas Essentials-The Cookie Jar

Christmas was about fudge and cookies when I was growing up.Mom would start in November baking and freezing all to the goodies that we loved so much. Then, they were placed every year in this Dutch Boy Cookie Jar.I loved this old cookie jar, and low and behold, I found out about 15 years ago that my mom still had it. She knew how much I loved it, so she put my name on the bottom of it, meaning that when she passed, that it would be mine. It now proudly sits on top of my refrigerator, and is awaiting the cookies that will fill it this coming weekend.
The old boy is still in perfect shape.I found out that it is an antique. It, however, is not for sale. Some memories just can't be bought.

The Spirit of Christmas Past

Was it the silent snow as it fell on the silver mountains? Maybe it was the tiny shops with the Holiday merchandise displayed in their windows. Of course,I didn't think of them as such tiny stores back then.
Maybe it was the annual lighting of the tree on King Street. Perhaps it was the friendly faces of the residents of our community. Maybe it was the Christmas parties that we had in school. Yes, Virginia, there used to be Christmas parties in public schools. But, probably, it was just because I was a kid, and home was still the best place to be. All I do know for sure was that I loved Christmas time in Wallace when I was growing up.

The night after Thanksgiving kicked the whole thing off back then, No, there was no Christmas stuff out before Halloween in those days, and Thanksgiving was actually celebrated as a separate day of the Christmas season. But but the night after Thanksgiving was special, because the stores in Wallace were open until 11:00 PM for our shopping pleasure. I am not talking about the so called antique and rock shops that clutter the downtown area now. No! I am talking about real stores with real merchandise.

Hard to believe, but we "old"d timers knew a whole different town than what exists today.
Morrows Department Store, Gene's Radio, later Gambels, Fonks, Lockhart's Pharmacy, Wallace Supply, Tabors, Ramsier's Pharmacy, Beulah's Jewelry, Gabie's Jewelry,JC Penny, Elder's Variety, Rullman Men's Wear, Cams, Rexall Pharmacy, and Western Auto. Of course, there were coffee shops and bars galore. Car dealerships, and full service gas stations were on every corner. There were two movie theatres to choose from. Wow, what a town it was! I miss it. Yes, Christmas in Wallace was very special.
