The Grand Old Lady -the queen of all stadiums

Living one block away from this stadium was a dream come true. Unfortunately, I was poorer than a church mouse in those days, and could only listen to the loud speaker from the top of the building that I was living in
I was there for an old timer's game and heard the still living legends of the Yankee greats called out by THE VOICE of the Yankees, Bob Sheppard. I can still hear him call out in that New York accent, "Now ladies and gentleman, the chairman of the board Whitey Ford." The roar of the crowds could be heard for blocks away in the God forsaken streets of the Bronx. I heard it from the roof top of my building, and I still get chills when I think about it..
The old lady was demolished this past Spring , and a newer version now stands in the Bronx. But, it cannot be the same. For it is not the House that Ruth Built.

Eternally Optimistic-The joy of Baseball

There are so many beautiful things about baseball and the connection it has to daily living. One of my favorites is the yearly cry of the team known to baseball fans all over the nation simply as the "Cubbies"
For every October1, the fans of the Cubbies raise their beers towards heavens, and with all of the conviction they can muster in hopes of petitioning the baseball gods, cry out "wait until next year".And the amazing thing is that they actually believe it despite the fact that  the Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908. Yes, 1908, a measly 102 years ago.

Now, that is true optimism. You got to love it! The Cubs did make it to the Series in 1945, but lost in 7 games. Since then, they have come close, but call it a curse, or just sheer bad luck, the Cubbies just keep missing out. But still, the faithful cry out "Wait until next year" We call them lovable Cubbies. Would they be lovable if they were winners instead of perennial losers? Doubtful.

As  Seattle Mariner fan, I can relate to the Cub's faithful, for the M's have never even been to the Big Dance. This season is looking very dismal, and already I am thinking "wait until next year?

You see, that is a lot like life. Today might not have produced a win your life, but there is always tomorrow, there is always next month, and there is always next year. Got to love those Cubbies.
